The full moon of Waso in July marks the start of the three-month Buddhist Lent, which signifies the Lord Buddha's first sermon made 2,500 years ago. It is a period for reflection, meditation and contemplation. Monks return to their monasteries for spiritual retreat while young people who have to spend an obligatory season in monasteries do so around this time. Ordinary folk are also expected to be more spiritual. Events such as marriages and moving houseare avoided.
